Ellen Griffin
is a nonbinary ceramic artist whose work is inspired by the intricate forms and textures of nature, exploring the connection between natural forms and queer identity. Their artistic journey began with a hands-on love for playdough and clay from a young age, which later blossomed into a passion for ceramics during a high school class. Initially pursuing a degree in Genetic Engineering, Ellen soon realized that their true path lay in the art world, leading to a shift toward a more creative academic path. Ellen's work delves into the interplay between non-human shapes and human perceptions, addressing themes such as empathy, dehumanization, and the notion of the "Other" in society. Raised in a conservative Christian household and later embracing a queer identity, Ellen confronts the widening gap between differing beliefs, drawing from personal experiences as a member of the LGBT community in the traditionally conservative Deep South.
In their exploration of “the queer love of unlovable things,” Ellen delves into the queer community’s cultural affection for elements of the natural world often ostracized by mainstream society. By contrasting cultivated and wild elements, such as the dandelion and the rose, Ellen reflects broader societal tensions between acceptance and rejection. In their latest series of works, they use rigid grids to symbolize societal constructs that dictate norms and values, creating visual metaphors that resonate with their childhood experiences and the constraints imposed by hetero-normative culture. As Ellen continues to explore the intersections of nature, identity, and societal norms through ceramics, they aim to spark dialogue, challenge perceptions, and foster a greater understanding of the complexities of human experience. Through their work, Ellen Griffin invites viewers to reflect on the impact of societal expectations and invites them to embrace the beauty of diversity and authenticity.
